5 Signs Your Conveyor Chain Needs Replacing (Avoid Costly Downtime)

5 Signs Your Conveyor Chain Needs Replacing (Avoid Costly Downtime)

A worn conveyor chain left in service is one of the most expensive causes of unplanned downtime in any plant. A chain that breaks mid-production can stop an entire line for hours. The good news: chain wear almost always gives warning signs before total failure. Here are five to watch for.

1. Excessive Chain Elongation

With use, pins and bushings wear and the pitch lengthens. Once elongation exceeds 2–3% of the original length, the chain no longer fits the sprocket properly and risks slipping or breaking. Measure regularly and compare against the original specification.

2. Sprocket Wear

Sprocket teeth that are becoming pointed or hook-shaped show that chain and sprocket are grinding each other down. Replacing the chain without replacing worn sprockets accelerates wear on the new chain — always inspect both together.

3. Corrosion, Cracks or Deformed Links

Check visually for heavy rust, hairline cracks or bent links. In hot or chemical environments (such as cement or fertilizer plants), corrosion accelerates failure. Cracked links must not be casually welded — their strength can no longer be guaranteed.

4. Loose Joints and Abnormal Noise

Squealing, rattling or jerking as the chain passes over the sprocket points to loose joints or poor lubrication. Excess vibration also speeds up wear on other conveyor components.

5. Increasing Repair Frequency

If you find yourself adjusting, lubricating or replacing individual links more and more often, it is usually cheaper to replace the whole chain than to keep patching it — especially once downtime costs are counted.

Tip: log operating hours and chain inspection results. This data helps predict when replacement is due, so you can schedule it during a planned shutdown — not when the chain breaks in the middle of production.

Replace with Quality Chain

When it is time to replace, use quality forged chain with material certificates. VOLER supplies heat-treated forged conveyor chain for a wide range of heavy-duty applications — and if your old chain is no longer produced, we can remanufacture it through reverse engineering.

Conclusion

Routine inspection and timely replacement cost far less than downtime from a broken chain. Know the signs, schedule the replacement, and use quality components to keep production running.
